Home maintenance items as we head into Fall

September 25, 2018

Life in Wisconsin is never dull – there’s always tons to do and we share weekend events each week in posts like these.  We are fortunate to have 4 seasons in Wisconsin – a nice variety – although some could do without winter.  And, some don’t like summer’s heat and humidity. There’s something for everyone here!

With the changing seasons there are also some tasks to accomplish around the house.  This time, we prepare the house and yard for the cooler weather of fall and the coming of winter’s snow.

Before you head outside, throw dinner in the slow cooker and your home will smell great & dinner will be waiting for you after your busy day in the yard.

Heating

Change furnace filter

Have furnace serviced for efficiency

Check fireplace for cracks, check damper.

Water

Drain garden hoses & stow hoses

Turn off all shut-off valves to hose spigots

Yard /Exterior

Cut down spent perennials

Clean out those gutters

Blow leaves out of garden beds and lawn

Empty out annual plantings from flower pots and stack pots away

Caulk windows if needed

Pressure wash patios/decks and stain or seal decks

Check weatherstripping around doors

Check the roof for loose shingles or wind damage

Walk around the home’s perimeter to check for digging from pests trying to get inside

Interior

Change carbon monoxide and smoke detector batteries

Check for proper insulation to prevent ice dams

Paint. Any interior paint job needs ventilation. Do it before winter sets in.

Equipment

Get the snowblower ready and fire it up

Stow the mower after running out the fuel or put a fuel stabilizer to the gas tank
