Life in West Bend, WI

Washington County Court House

When considering moving to a new community, people usually want to know a little bit about it. So, occasionally, we will feature some of the cities and towns in Wisconsin where First Weber sells real estate. Today we offer some info on West Bend which is in Washington County, 20 minutes north of Milwaukee, 90 minutes east of Madison and less than 2 hours from Green Bay and Chicago. Homes for sale in the West Bend area range from affordable city homes with small, neat, shaded lots in the $100,000-$200,000 range to spacious lake homes in the upper $700,000’s, with homes on half acre plus lots in the middle.

There’s a good mix of new businesses in strip malls and an historic downtown with the Milwaukee River running through.  A few of the West Bend community events coming up (and ongoing) include:

A Community Blood Drive July 28, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend

A cell phone collection held by the Chamber – Cell Phones for Soldiers

"Yoga on the Prairie" Saturday mornings in summer.

Germanfest in Downtown West Bend runs August 26-28. Come listen to the many polka bands and eat some great food while you wander the downtown area.

Downtown West Bend also hosts a Farmer’s Market each Saturday 7:30 a. – 11 June 4-Oct 29, 2011 and Music on Main Thursday nights through August.  Come on down with your lawn chairs and enjoy a summer night at Old Settler’s Park.

There’s even a GeoCache Bash in August highlighting local businesses.

West Bend, according to wikipedia, was named for the western bend in the Milwaukee River which runs through town.  West Bend was the halfway point in the journey between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac when a road between the two cities was approved in 1845. Because many people used West Bend as a resting place, it soon became a popular place.  West Bend’s current popoulation is approximately 30,000.

West Bend has several elementary schools, 2 middle schools and 2 high schools. You can check out the West Bend school district here if schools are important to you.

Attractions and activities include many parks, a paved riverwalk, swimming pond/beach, numerous playgrounds and baseball diamonds, and the historic downtown with speciality shops.  West Bend is also home to the Museum of Wisconsin Art and the Old Courthouse and Jailhouse museums.
