Some additional tips for home and family safety include:

Have an emergency kit with flashlights, water and canned foods, essential medicines and first aid items

Have a pre-determined family meeting spot

Make sure children know how to dial 911 and know basic fire safety rules

Include spare clothing, blankets and your insurance contact in your home emergency kit as well. (The picture above also shows yarn for something to do if stuck in a shelter!)

Stay safe by taking a few moments to prepare your home emergency kit and keep up on your homeowners insurance. You never know when it can become very, very necessary. Our thoughts are with all whose homes were damaged out east in Hurricane Sandy.
