6 tips to keep your home safe while on vacation
Stop the mail/paper delivery
This is simple to do and easily hides the fact you are gone for an extended period of time. Be careful not to order any deliveries from amazon close to your trip, too.
Light up your exterior
Make sure you have plenty of exterior lighting on that illuminates your home and entries to deter break-ins.
Talk to your neighbors
Inform your trusted neighbors of your vacation plans
Ask them to keep an eye on your house. Maybe ask them to bring in the mail. Provide a contact number in case the unthinkable happens like a tree down or fire. You may also consider providing them with a spare key.
Plan for snow or lawn care
You never know if it will snow while you are gone so have a plan in place to make sure your drive is cleared in the event. Also, depending on the season/length of your trip, arrange for lawn care. Your neighbors will appreciate it and your home looks cared for and occupied.
Set automatic timers
This is a long-used method. Vary the times, rooms and lights with multiple timers to achieve the best effect and keep burglars guessing.
Don’t share on social media
Restrain yourself from posting vacation plans and pictures on social media. You are advertising to an unknown amount of people that your home is unoccupied, and thus vulnerable. Post away after you return! We’re sure that vacation was fabulous!
