Closet Organization Guide

January 28, 2020

Most of us could use a little more organization in our lives, especially in our closets. Whether your closet is big or small, I’m sure you could use some decluttering and rearranging. Don’t wait for spring, take our advice and start your closet organization early this year!

Clear Out

Before you begin to reorganize your closet, you will need to take everything out. Not only is this the easiest way to look at everything you have, but it’s also a nice way to have a fresh start with your closet. Sort your clothes into categories such as jackets, sweaters, jeans, etc. Once you do that you can move on to the next step of the process.

Decide What You Want to Keep

This may be the most difficult part. Parting with clothes or shoes that you once loved can be challenging! However, if you haven’t worn an article of clothing or a pair of shoes in a while, you may no longer need it. Set a timeline to decide whether you want to keep things or not. For example, if you haven’t worn something for over a year, toss it! Sometimes though, that is easier said than done. You may not be ready to cut the cord on each article of clothing that fast and that’s okay! For the things that are more difficult to decide if you want to keep or not, make a maybe pile and determine at a later date if you want to get rid of it. We also recommend donating your clothes if they are in good condition!

Make a Plan

Now that you know what will be going back into your closet, it’s time to construct a plan of action. Are you going to organize your clothes by color, type of clothing, which season you will wear it or some other way? You will want to answer this question before you start shoving your stuff back into your closet.

Organize!

It’s time to put your items back into your closet! You’ve now come up with a plan of how you are going to place your clothes and other items in an organized fashion. Organizing a closet can be a tall task! Once you’ve finished up, you may want to come up with some kind of system to keep your closet organized going forward so you don’t need to repeat this process as often.
