Avoiding Home Buyer’s Remorse

January 14, 2020

We’ve all experienced it at some point in our lives. We buy something and then we later regret it. This isn’t as big of a deal when we are purchasing items like new shoes or a new sweater, but it’s a much bigger problem when you feel this way after buying a house. You can’t just return a home if you realize you made a mistake buying it in the first place. Here’s how you can prevent home buyer’s remorse.

Make a list of features

When you prepare to start your home search, start by making a list of features that you absolutely need. If you have a big family you may need more bedrooms, extra bathrooms or a large living space. This will help you narrow down the homes you are interested in viewing before making a purchase. Of course, there may be features you want but don’t necessarily need. You should write these down as well. It’s difficult to find a home that has everything you need and want at the price point you are looking at, but you should be able to get a home with all of the features you need along with some of the features you want.

Do Your Homework

The features of a home are definitely important. However, there is more to buying a home than just looking for features. There are other factors you should consider such as commute time, school districts, neighborhood safety, etc. If you have trouble finding information on some of these, you can always find help from a First Weber agent.

Ask others for Input

What better way to avoid home buyer’s remorse than to talk to people who have already bought homes? Your friends or family members who have gone through the home buying process are sure to have some advice for you. They can help you learn from their experiences so you can feel good about your home purchase when you find a home you want to buy.

Shop Around

You should never buy the first home you look at. Even if you really like it, it’s always a good idea to look at other options so you can compare before making such a big purchase. While shopping around, refer back to your list of features you wrote down to make sure you are finding them in the houses you are looking at buying. Shopping around will help reduce the chances of you having buyer’s remorse in the future since you will have weighed your options and thought it through.
