When it comes to a home, small doesn’t have to mean claustrophobic and cluttered. You can have a peaceful space that you enjoy. We recently covered Tips on Decorating a Large Room, so this time we are here to give you some guidance on making the best use of a small space.
Let the Light In
Avoid letting a room feel claustrophobic with good lighting. Let in all the natural light you can through the windows and use additional lighting throughout the space to add warmth. Try floor and table lamps and if you don’t have room for those wall sconces and pendant lighting work great too.
Use Large Rugs
Small area rugs are a sure way to make a small room look even smaller. Decorate the room with a big rug to help trick the eye into making the room feel bigger. Aim for a rug that is large enough for the legs of your furniture pieces to fit on it.
Mirrors
Mirrors add additional light and the illusion that the space is bigger than it is. Mirrors are great for reflecting back natural light and are also great on their own. Use a large mirror, arrange smaller ones throughout the room, or create a gallery wall of mirrors.
Be Creative with Storage
Think about Usability. Try to incorporate pieces that serve more than one purpose. For example, you can have an ottoman or coffee table that opens up for storage or a desk that serves as a nightstand. Look for multi-purpose and/or folding furniture to save space and money.
Take Advantage of Vertical Space
Play around with taller items and add shelves on the walls to add decorative pieces. If you decide to add drapes to the windows, use up the vertical space there. Install the rod 2 inches below the ceiling, or crown molding helps draw the eye up and can make the space feel larger.
Less is More
When dealing with a small space, it can be tempting to fill it with chairs, loveseats, tables, bookcases, or anything you think you need. Occupying every inch of the room’s space leads to clutter. When you fill every part of the space, your eyes have no place to rest. It can be difficult to enjoy being in the space if it feels chaotic.
Ultimately, you want to take as much advantage as you can with the space you have and maximize its possibilities to show off the space. Work with your intuition, don’t try to work in anything that doesn’t feel or look right.
